Using shovels with hockey stick-shaped handles, a group of dignitaries dug into a sandbox filled with dirt set atop the green artificial turf of an outdoor field hockey playing surface on a sunny, breezy Friday morning. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Pegula Ice Arena will not open until September of 2013, but if you close your eyes and open them up inside the CAVE model of the future home of Penn State Hockey at the Applied Research Laboratory on the west side of campus you would think it was open now.

The hockey head coaches and a few staff members recently received an incredible first-hand look at Pegula Ice Arena inside the Applied Research Lab 3D Stereoscopic Model. Women's hockey head coach Josh Brandwene summed up the detailed model of Pegula Ice Arena best.

"In a word - awesome," Brandwene said. "It makes you realize what a first class facility this going to be at Penn State."

With aid of a wireless controller, the interactive model enabled the coaches and staff to virtually move throughout the arena. From the ice and benches to the concourse and suites, the CAVE model inside the Synthetic Environment Applications Laboratory (SEA Lab) takes onlookers through a 1:1 scale tour of the facility. All four walls and the floor provide a virtual experience of Pegula Ice Arena unlike anywhere else in the world.

Tim Shaw, Head of the SEA Lab, Vaughn Whisker, Research Associate at the SEA Lab, and the SEA Lab staff worked with Mortenson Construction and Crawford Architects to build an exact 1:1 model of the 6,000-seat home of Penn State Hockey before it is constructed.

Men's hockey head coach Guy Gadowsky was impressed from the moment he stepped into the CAVE model.

"It is awesome," Coach Gadowsky said. "It is so cool being able to go through the arena. It gives you a great idea about what Pegula Ice Arena is going to be like. I just wish it were here right now. It is going to be beautiful."

One of the trademark features that stood out in the Pegula Ice Arena model was the student section. The steep architectural design in the 1,000-seat student section will put Penn State students on top of the goalie at one end of the ice.

With superb weather in Happy Valley this spring, construction of Pegula Ice Arena at the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road is progressing on schedule for completion in September of 2013. The men's and women's hockey teams will begin varsity competition during the 2012-'13 season.

Plans for the 6,000-seat, 200,000-square-foot arena named after Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, who graduated from Penn State, were formally approved late last week by the Penn State Board of Trustees. Pegula, in September 2010, donated $88 million to his alma mater to finance the construction of the rink and to help the Nittany Lions create a NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey program. 18 of 19 Penn State skaters recorded a point as the Icers (1-0) downed the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen (0-4), 12-1, at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Leading the way offensively for Penn State were Justin Kirchhevel (4 assists), Taylor Holstrom (1 goal, 2 assists) and Tommy Olczyk (1 goal, 2 assists). Bryce Johnson opened the scoring just over two minutes in when he picked up a puck behind the net and wrapped it around and between the legs of LVC goalie Colin Catherman. The Icers would score three times in the first, four in the second, and five in the third. The Icers showed their offensive depth throughout the course of the night, with ten players potting goals. Penn State controlled the play, outshooting LVC 64-7.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - GoPSUsports.com continues to introduce Nittany Lion men's hockey head coach Guy Gadowsky's staff today. Assistant coach Matt Lindsay joined the Penn State staff after a four-year stint with Coach Gadowsky at Princeton. A Williams College graduate, Lindsay coached for one season at Utica College and spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Hobart College. He then held a volunteer assistant post at Colorado College for a year before serving as an assistant coach at Robert Morris prior to going to Princeton in 2007.

After a scoreless and tightly contested first period, the Rams finally struck, getting a goal from Shawn Tingley off a rebound. The loss snaps the Icers' 4-game winning streak and puts them more firmly on the bubble of making the ACHA National Tournament.

UNION LAKE, MI - The two-time defending ACHA Men's Division 1 National Champions, Lindenwood University, received 34 first-places votes to remain on top in the 2010-2011 ACHA Men's Division 1 Ranking #7. The Lions 17-game winning streak was finally snapped at home by #14 Illinois on Saturday, January 8, but the Lions responded with a sweep of #13 Robert Morris Illinois. Garnering 3 first-place votes and holding at #2 behind the Lions is the three-time defending defending ACHA Men's Division 2 National Champions, Davenport University. The Panthers went 5-0 with a 3-game sweep of #20 Western Michigan and a sweep of #15 Liberty. Ohio moved up to #3 after sweeping #11 Penn State, while #4 Delaware and #5 Adrian round out the top 5.

University Park, Pa Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 21) approved the name of the University's future state-of-the-art, multi-purpose arena "Pegula Ice Arena" after donors Terrence M. and Kim Pegula. In mid-September, the University announced the Pegulas' $88 million gift, the largest private gift in Penn State's history, which was intended to fund the arena as well as help to establish an NCAA Division I men's hockey program.

Kirstein suffered the injury during practice Tuesday, when he suffered a big hit by a teammate during a drill. Penn State coach Scott Balboni called the injury a "stinger" Tuesday, but Wednesday Kirstein said the injury was a sprained MCL. The senior forward did not give a definite timetable for his return and he joins a growing list of injured Icers. "It's real frustrating just for the fact alone that I thought I had a pretty good year last year," Kirstein said. "I wanted to be able to be a leader for the team on the ice and continue to play the way I played. I think the toughest thing is it's tough to be a leader when you're not able to play. You can do many things, but being on the ice with the guys is the biggest thing you miss." Kirstein -- who said he already started to rehab the knee before he went to the doctor Wednesday -- had been in and out of the lineup so far this season. ".....

Here one second and gone the next. The Icers' inconsistency with special teams -- both on the power play and taking penalties -- has been one of the themes a month into the ACHA season. But while the Icers have attributed the penalties to their style of play, they're still trying to figure out why the power play has taken a Jekyll-and-Hyde-like quality. Saturday morning, they'll make the three-hour, 170-mile trek down to West Chester to face the Golden Rams later that night, 22-and-a-half hours after Friday night's faceoff. Because their entire schedule is condensed on Friday and Saturday nights, the Icers are used to playing back-to-back games all season. This, however, will be the first time they'll play a road game the night after a late home game. ....."

O'Brien, last year's leading scorer, has three points in four games, but only one goal. Instead, the player who leads the Icers in points and goals through the first four games is freshman Dominic Morrone, who has four goals and six points. Morrone is one of three freshmen in the top four in scoring and one of the forwards providing needed depth for the Icers while some of the veterans have struggled finding the net. "Each of them have been able to contribute their own," Penn State coach Scott Balboni said. "Going into the year, we knew that some freshmen had to step up and play just by pure numbers, and obviously there's a few of them who have stepped up, played real well." ....."

The Icers went to Ohio last weekend, bringing a young squad with many new faces into a hostile arena against the No. 5 Bobcats. They left the Buckeye State with a weekend split against their arch nemesis and a sense of where the Icers are four games into the season. "A lot of the younger guys stepped up in a big-time atmosphere," junior forward Tim O'Brien said. "Ohio is one of our top competitors and one of our biggest rivals. I think our team got a good understanding of where we stand together and how far we've come since the preseason." ....."

Clinging to a one goal lead, the Icers gave up the game-tying goal with two guys sitting in the box and less than a minute left. In overtime, however, the Icers (3-1-0) managed to avoid giving Ohio any more powerplays, something the team has struggled with through the first two weekends of the season, and eventually scored with only one second left in the extra period to win 4-3......"

The arena houses a rink with a neutral zone about 60 percent the normal size with bigger than normal offensive zones. Bird Arena's seating areas are right on top of the benches and rise up over the players as a standing room only crowd creates a hostile environment for any opposing team. Only two weeks into this young season, the Icers will play in Bird Arena, embarking on their first road trip of the year, one that coach Scott Balboni calls the toughest of the season....."
